Computer Technology Class Refurbishes Laptops

Posted on April 2, 2012

Repairing laptops for a worthy cause is not work to ESBOCES Computer Technology students.

A student in the Computer Technology class at the Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) in Bellport sat by a pile of 50 repaired laptops as he explained to a visitor that teacher Giovanni Chiarelli had introduced him and his peers to Comp4Kids. The non-profit organization collects non-working computer equipment, which the students volunteer to refurbish. The 501(c)(3) organization then distributes them free to low-income families across Long Island, making a difference in children’s lives.

A junior in the Westhampton Beach UFSD and an Eastern Suffolk BOCES student, Joseph Mulholland added, “This is a terrific community service project. Speaking for myself, fixing computers is a hobby. As a child, I enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together.” He envisions taking computer science in college and having a career in the technology field. For now, Joe is gaining the experience of fixing laptops the correct way and adding software.

Mr. Chiarelli reported that the project would be ongoing into the next school year. “It has enhanced our curriculum,” he explained, “plus the students receive service credit as they give back to the communities that support us.” One day a week, the students stay in their home school districts to shadow the professional technology staff.
