Students attending the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Bellport Academic Center (BAC) are studying a unit on Alternative Forms of Energy. They are learning how important energy alternatives are to the future of the planet Earth.

Patrick W., a student from the Middle Country CSD in Rosemarie Reichert’s Reading and Writing in the Content Area class researched solar power and chose to construct a solar powered windmill from Legos.

Using the Lego kit instructions, Patrick completed the construction of the solar powered windmill in approximately one week. He said, "Solar powered windmills could generate enough money from the sun to power many cities, even the world."

Students in the class tested the windmill and were excited to see that it worked.

Ms. Reichert said, “It was a great experience for the students to be involved in problem solving strategies that could benefit their world.”
